Huitzilopochtli, the "Left-Handed Hummingbird," was a primary god of the Aztecs. He was their god of war, death, and the sun. His mother, Coatlicue, became pregnant with him when a ball of feathers fell from the heaven and touched her. Huitzilopochtli's siblings thought that their mother Coatlicue had dishonored them with her mysterious pregnancy. One of his sisters, Coyolxauhqui, encouraged her sisters and brothers (the stars) to kill their mother, but Huitzilopochtli learned of the plot, sprang out of his mother, and saved her. Huitzilopochtli cut off Coyolxauhqui's head and threw it in the sky to become the Moon.

For my last entry in the Central American pantheon, I’ve run into a problem. I can’t seem to create good solo soldiers, at least in part because I can’t wrap my head around the concept. A soldier is defined as “monsters [that] specialize in drawing the characters’ attacks and defending other monsters” (DMG, page 55). This is counter-intuitive for a solo creature. Solo is defined as “a person who works, acts, or performs alone,” so who’s the solo protecting? Looking at other solo soldiers, I receive no guidance, as the ones I reviewed don’t seem to have protective powers either. The definition of soldier also provides that “they often have powers that hinder other creatures from moving around them,” but it seems that a “solo soldier” is simply a matter of mechanics (defenses, attack bonuses, etc.), so at the risk of an overcomplicated stat block, I simply made him a mechanical nightmare. I would suggest giving him minion allies, though. His association with the hummingbird would suggest avian allies, who should prefer to attack from range so as to take best advantage of Huitzilopochtli’s soldier powers. Consider a dire Lucifer Sheartail, a.k.a., Lucifer Hummingbird (Calothorax lucifer), which is a hummingbird native to Mexico.

Taking from his first edition Deities & Demigods treatment, I gave him a power Triple Attack, Flank Retaliation as a response to being hit while flanked, and Luck of Huitzilopochtli as a means to aid his allies. From his historical myth, his status as one of the sun gods inspired his Brilliant Armor trait and Brilliant Rays power, the latter used by Huitzilopochtli to kill his treacherous siblings. He also carried a Blue Serpent-like Staff and arrows.

Huitzilopochtli prefers to fly, though due his extensive knowledge of warfare, he will use teleportation to avoid opportunity attacks or movement-hampering conditions.
