    Favorite arcane spell?

Ready, go! Don't give one word responses or you'll get booed. Tell me why you like it, how you describe it when it's cast, and what makes it so rad.

I like spells that have neat effects or make things more fun. Mirror Image, Expeditious Retreat, Polymorph, Fly, Invisibility, Prestidigitation, Ghost Sound, Mage Hand, Glitterdust, Grease, Featherfall, Cure X Wounds, Raise Dead, Disguise Self, Create Water... Things like that.

Illusions and charms, in general, really. None of that dull-as-dishwater blasty stuff. That's why I've never played a Wizard in 4E. Too much blasty. Not enough subtle and quick to anger. You don't get the L7 Wizard turning invisible, polymorphing himself into a bugbear, flying, and then coming up behind someone and pounding him.

Rope Trick without a doubt has always been my favorite arcane spell. It was extremely useful for hiding out when you were banged up and needed a minute. It was also something that could help a party out in a way that wasn't blowing a hole in something. Cast Rope Trick about two feet out over a cliff and pull the rope up and you are pretty squared away for awhile. The duration was what it needed to be to make the spell effective. You could also make a component rope from something exotic like braided giant hair.

4e: Beguiling Strands. At first level with the right feat and class support, you have a friendly Blast 5 that pushes 5 squares and does just enough damage to clear out minions. It's a great "Get the hell away from me, don't you know I'm a squishy Wizard?!" spell.

Pathfinder/3.x/etc.: Grease, Web, and all those sorts of spells. You can do so much with those to completely ruin a DM's day. Trust me, I'm usually on the other side of the screen for those...

    Thumbs up Magic Missile

    Magic Missile!

As a DM I always like saying, “…and five arcane bolts slam into you for X damage!” as I roll the dice.

Sometimes it's fun to go overboard. I’ll say the player sees the missiles unerringly home in on him/her, zipping over and under comrades and foes alike, and then feels heat and pain as the missiles strike chest, arms and legs, with only their swiftest last second movement to throw their arms up preventing one or more missiles from plunging through their eyes and piercing their brains.

    Yep, good spell.
Realmslore is a lot like a fractal: the thinner you slice it the more details you get. This is why there are no absolutes in the Realms.
