You bring up an excellent point Matt. I think WotC are aware that the potential is there although I can't elaborate on what makes me believe that right now (I mentioned that I got the Silence Spell on some marketing and distribution stuff in my EN World piece about the D&D Summit). Perhaps in a play to bring back gamers who left the fold with their addition of choice they would do this and it is entirely possible that you get there interest in your new edition of the game. What you said about the costs are probably pretty accurate as it wouldn't take much in the way of staffing and the platform (DDI) is already there for distribution. I am sure the business people (yes they are in business) over at WotC will at some point realize that they can bring fans of older editions back into the fold eventually. You are correct about the grognarding and if WotC announced this tomorrow some would say that they aren't even making a next edition anymore and that Wizards is only supporting old stuff from now on. Great article, I am excited to see how different what they manage to pull off is from what they had planned.

I'd be all for this if I knew it would allow me to get my hands on PDF issues of out of print Dragon and Dungeon magazines.

I have copies of several old issues that I go back to again and again for use during play; they're the issues that have seen use across three major editions of the D&D game and I'd love to have digital versions that I can call up on my laptop.

To me, it would be better for Wizards of the Coast to start by simply releasing the content of older editions as part of a monthly roll-out of gaming material through DDI, starting with 3rd Edition D&D and working backwards until all the digital material is available to subscribers.

Once they've gauged the level of interest (in terms of new or re-upped subscriptions to DDI), they can decide based on download activity and/or surveys what rules editions to focus on for new articles and content.

All in my armchair opinion, of course.
